Read useful definitions of commonly used terms in the digital marketing, events management and direct marketing arena.

Viral marketing

Spreading a brand message using word of mouth (or electronically - 'word of mouse') from a few points of dissemination. Typical techniques include using email messages, jokes, web addresses, film clips and games that get forwarded on electronically by recipients

Virtual community

A community that exists and interacts online.

Vision

The long-term aims and aspirations of the company for itself.

White Hat SEO

White Hat SEO is the process of following regulations and methods of legitimate and ethical SEO.

War horse

A product with a large market share of a declining market.

Word of Mouth

The spreading of information through human interaction alone. Some campaigns have used this as key element, for example, the British Gas privatisation's 'ask Sid' promotion. Also see 'Viral marketing'.

Widget

A small application that provides specific functions such as hit counter, twitter feed, latest blog post links or other automatically updated lists.

Wiki

A wiki is a website page or collection of pages that are easy to update or edit and includes content from a number of different users. Wikipedia is the most well known of this type of site.

Wordpress

WordPress is a content management system or open source publishing system created mainly for blogging. It is designed to make it easier for managing content that is updated on a regular basis.

Wordtracker

Wordtracker is tool that is used to research keywords that are relevant to a publisher’s website.

XML Sitemap

XML Sitemap – Designed for search engines, an XML sitemap is the means of organising a website. It will identify the URL and the data under each section.

Yahoo

A major search engine and web company created in 1994 by Jerry Yang and David Filo.
